Ritucharya Routine: Winter to Spring Ayurveda Tips
Hello Spring! As the first day of spring is here, kapha season has officially begun. Ayurveda is all about wisdom and harmony between our bodies and the environment. As the seasons change, our bodies do too. A gentle detox is the best way to maintain this balance.
What does this mean? Moist, cool, and heavy qualities will be more prevalent in our outer and inner environments during springtime. Ayurveda marks this transition between seasons as Ritu Sandhi and emphasizes the ideal time to do a gentle detox. Ritucharya is the seasonal routine associated with these seasonal time periods.
Winter: vata dominant (ether + air)
imbalanced: constipation, dryness, joint pain, anxiety, insomnia, cold hands and feet
balanced: creative, energetic, sound sleep, even body temperature
Spring: kapha dominant (water + earth)
imbalanced: congestion, allergies, heaviness, depression, sleepiness, low energy, weight gain
balanced: sustained energy, compassionate, generous, even-tempered
Ayurveda tips to help detox this spring:
Drink warm water with lemon first thing in the morning.
Get moving! Doing light exercise such as walking or yoga will help combat the sluggishness of kapha and won't be overstimulating for vata.
Eat warm, cooked meals. This is a great time to have kitchari, a traditional detox dish of rice and mung dahl.
Receive an Ayurvedic treatment. Abhyanga massage is the traditional Ayurvedic massage that loosens ama, or toxins, and brings them to the digestive system for proper elimination. Add a Shirodhara treatment to balance the mind. You can book an Ayurvedic treatment or consultation with me below.
